People have always wanted to look good. They want to be liked, accepted and appreciated by society. Appearing good also increases their morale and often helps them in other areas of their life. People want to appear young, fit, and attractive. Getting fitter and looking younger involve exercise and diet that takes time to show its effects. The faster way to achieve that is through the use of cosmetics. Cosmetics makes one look good, smell good, and better groomed. There is a wide range of products designed for different people. There are hundreds of brands with their own unique brand values and ethos. There is a recent trend where people are buying more organic cosmetics for different reasons.
What is organic?
Organic is a naturally derived product that did not use artificial fertilizer or harmful chemicals. 100% Organic would mean all the products used are organic. To label, a product organic at least 95% of the ingredients should be organic. A product that has at least 70% of organic ingredients can be labeled ‘Made with organic ingredients’. Water and salt are excluded from this list of ingredients as they are commonly used inorganic substances. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Organic Program (NOP) are the bodies that are in charge of regulating the use of the term ‘organic’ within the United States.
Why is it better?
Most cosmetics are used on the skin of a person. The skin is capable of absorbing a small portion of these substances. Sometimes it is not an option at all. If you have very sensitive skin, it may react to most mainstream cosmetics. In some cases, the effects take a while to show or they start acting overtime in cases of prolonged use. Cosmetics are required to be tested since the wrong substance could pose a health risk. Organic cosmetics do not pose such a risk since it is mostly made of natural ingredients. It is also considered better for the environment. There is also a certain degree of public anger at mainstream cosmetic companies that engage in animal testing.
How did the change happen?
There are a handful of companies that currently dominate the cosmetics industry. Their biggest challenge is not coming from each other but from smaller players. This is the place where organic cosmetics are quickly gaining a foothold. The big players do come out with new products and a bigger variety to choose from. This is still not enough to compete with local players who can make products with a much higher degree of customization. Private label organic cosmetics cater to a much smaller market which can be persuaded better by using local languages, dialects and also local ingredients. They can also cope better with products that have a shorter shelf life. Bigger companies with a presence in many different countries will find it tough to uniformly access local ingredients, process, and supply them in every locality in every market they operate in. Organic cosmetics have carved out a big niche for themselves and it looks like it will keep growing.
